Pushing Virtual Limits

Sun xVM finally entering limited beta

See this post here and then here for details on how to sign up. This is definitely a good thing because I don’t see VMware spending the time to build a Sparc compliant VM platform anytime soon.
Having a number of Sparc boxes under my infrastructure I am dying to get my little hands on this and tweak with it to my hearts content. Will it ever rival VMware? I doubt it but for those of us who desperately need to leverage Sparc based hardware for platform testing this could be a god send.
Maybe someone in the blogosphere will take pity on me and let me in behind the velvet rope to put this through its paces. My contact info is there. Reach out and I will definitely run this stuff until it drops!

Thanks to Storagezilla for finding this flickr account.

Links to the images here.

For the record these screenshots constitute significantly more than one product but it is a good overview of what the D6.5 family is going to looklike. (Webtop, CenterStage, DA, WebPublisher, etc all have pics in there)

Virtual Center 2.5 IS supported with SQL Server 2000 SP4

Just because I have had a challenging week with VMware support around this issue I needed to publicly state that it is supported. It is always bad when as a support guy you provide the support note that proves you wrong.

Diane Green Out - Paul is in!

Apparently Pi is hot. I am very excited about the fact that Paul is going to take over VMware. I hope my colleagues (sort of EMC’ers) over there will welcome him and embrace his enthusiasm. If he can continue to bring the top notch effort that I have seen coming out of his former division than I think we have good things coming.

As always StorageZille sums it up nicely - “Have you stopped freaking out Yet” covers all the bases

Fort Collins and a week of lab construction

Safe in Fort Collins, Colorado getting ready to rack up a new CX3 box and a group of ESXi servers. Crossing my fingers that everything works according to plan.

Friday night to Orlando then Monday night to Denver with a drive to FC and then back home Saturday night. It is going to be a very long week but good stuff will get completed and that is what matters.

New Mozy Error
June 14, 2008, 2:55 am

If you have read my earlier posts you will know I am a big fan of Mozy. I think it is a great idea and I have an actual account (not just the free ones). My problem is that I am more than a month out of sync with Mozy because of stupid errors.

The latest error is - DB_ERROR[1]: no such table: restores

To find out what errors are causing your mozy to wander off in the wrong direction check \program files\mozyhome\data there is a file in there called mozy - open it in textpad and see what this little program has been up to.
I am at my wits end now and am thinking of canning the whole approach entirely. After multiple uninstalls and reinstalls it won’t start the mozy service now “cannot find the file specified” when I try and start it.

For the record I don’t mind this kind of additional effort when getting FreeNAS to work or building a Gentoo box. I do mind it when it is my backup solution and my data is at risk because it fails to function. Another continuing concern is what all these threats of charging for bandwidth used will do to cloud based computing. I don’t think the model can sustain the ISPs siphoning off revenue. Just my two cents.

Mozy state.dat part2

This problem has come up again to break my Mozy. I did four installations and uninstalltions, removed all the registry keys etc.
Somehow, someway, this state.dat stayed in my system and wacked me. The only thing I missed was the windows temp directory. I believe there must be remnants of the program there which cause this to be recreated during the new installation.

Chi.mp has a very cool name and so I figure it was worth signing up for. Supposedly they are going to rework the way we think of our presence online. Anyone who is interested in checking out what could be the next big thing should take a look.

I signed up and we will see what it brings in the future.

EMC World Coverage and why I still love PiWorx

Storagezilla has some very good coverage of what is going on at EMC World in Vegas (I am more than a little jealous).  Check that out for all the details he finds fit to print.

Just a quick positive note about PiWorx. My outlook inbox is large. Well in excess of 2gb and outlook search just doesn’t cut it anymore. While PiWorx doesn’t provide true federated search it provides a fast search that gets close to those kind of results. Outlook search for 20 minutes and never found the email attachment that PiWorx found in under 45 seconds. I was a bit desperate to find the attachment so this is a huge bonus that it was able to make that happen.

After outlook failed to find it I almost gave up and thought I had imagined seeing the quote. Thanks PiWorx for saving my sanity!

Oh - Anyone at EMC World get a chance to see the CMA Key Note by Mark Lewis? The Magellan product looks very slick. Hopefully this will be released to the wild soon so we can start talking about all the amazing things it can do. If you want in on the beta go here to register.
