I just finished reading this explanation of COIN theory and have to say it was great summation.  Utilizing these social sciences theories in our day to day work makes sense because they can allow us to step back and take fresh look at what we see happening.

What happens when people with M.A.’s in Political Science go and work for big IT Firms? Well, we tend to start looking for places to apply all those theories we spent years looking for.

Take a break from the norm and read this article. It will give you a new insight into how our military is engaging the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan and if you think about it I bet you can find that this theory makes sense in a lot more places than just Iraq.

(And they throw in Jedi Knights just to make it relevant to the IT crowd) ( :
For further reading I would also recommend a book which I have read many times – Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife: Counterinsurgency Lessons from Malaya and Vietnam. It is a short book with a still relevant take on counterinsurgency.
